In the pilot episode, Detective John Lowe is called to the scene of a murder inside the Hotel Cortez. When he arrives, he recognizes what he suspects is the work of a man he has come to think of as the “Ten Commandments Killer”. A dead woman is propped up on her knees in the bed, her body impaled by a spear, her hands nailed to the headboard to keep her upright. Below her, her still living lover is writhing in agony, his eyes and tongue removed. It's only later that John realizes it was he, himself, who murdered the woman and took the man's tongue and eyes as a trophy to be added to the hidden chamber in Room 64 of the Cortez.
