It was based on the 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs, which was the first in a series of 12 books. The film follows a young boy, Lewis Barnavelt (Owen Vaccaro), who is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan, in a creaky old house. He soon learns it was previously inhabited by an evil Warlock. From the 2018 film The House with a Clock in its Walls, this is Isaac Izard's Clock and Playing Card Key the film is based around. Hidden inside Jonathan’s house, Lewis uses a decoder to find the location of where it was hidden. They find the Bone key can unlock the clock turning back time and erasing all humanity. This particular clock is known as the breakaway clock and also includes the folded playing card key which was overlaid with CG to appear as if it was automatically folding into a key.
